COINS was established in 2013 to support Indigenous individuals and families throughout the Kootenay Boundary region. Our services focus on supporting Indigenous people to lead healthy, self-determining, proud and vibrant lives. Through our existing programs and the clients we serve, we have a deep understanding of the unique needs of Indigenous people and families in our region. Through our programs, we connect to First Nations, Métis, Inuit and mixed ancestry families making their home in the lands known today as the Kootenay Boundary. Our Elders Council reflects this diversity with individuals from many different Nations and with many different gifts and languages.
We are aware of individuals and families who have never accessed services within our region for many reasons, among them, the lack of culturally safe approaches. Our programs are person-centered and our staff work within trauma-informed, cultural frameworks.
COINS regional head office is located in Castlegar. The organization successfully established an Aboriginal Head Start childcare centre in Grand Forks in 2020. Programs and services are available in many communities throughout the West Kootenay and Boundary region. Check the event calendar to find a program or event close to you.
